Best Traditional Turkish Coffee Pot (Ibrik/Cezve) – A Buyer’s Guide

Let’s face it, not all of us can travel to Turkey to experience their distinctive delicious coffee and its heritage. I have some good news though: You can replicate part of the experience in your home by simply getting yourself a good Turkish coffee pot.

That doesn’t mean that you walk into a store or do a quick search online and buy the first pot you come across. You will be setting yourself up for disappointment.

It’s important that you take your time to know what the best options in the market are and which one suits your needs. Sounds like a lot of work, right?

Don’t worry! I have done the legwork for you. Your only job is to peruse this article. By the time you are done, you will have found the best Turkish coffee pot for your needs. I will also share useful information about these pots that will help you put them to good use.

Here’s their definition to start you off.

What is a Turkish Coffee Pot?

Put simply, this is a small handheld utensil with a long handle and a pouring lip. It’s only used to brew Turkish coffee.  Any other use would be your own creation.

In the older times, these pots were only available in copper with either brass or wooden handles. But a lot has changed over the years. Coffee maker manufacturers now make pots made of stainless steel, brass, and glass.

Some manufacturers have even gone the extra mile to make an automatic Turkish coffee maker. The choice of which option to use between the traditional pots and electric versions is all yours (more about this later).

You may have noticed some people refer to the traditional pot as Cezve while others call it ibrik. Both names have a rich history, and I’ll be telling you all about that below.

A Short History of Turkish Coffee Pots (Ibrik and Cezve)

Cezve has its origins in Turkish culture while ibrik traces its roots to Arabian culture. Both names are used interchangeably today to refer to Turkish coffee pots but that wasn’t the case centuries ago.

Ibrik is a Persian word. Back in the day, it referred to an ewer or pitcher, which is a long-spouted vase-shaped container used to store and pour liquid contents. Fast forward to today, the name is commonly used in English-speaking countries and Greece (briki) to refer to Turkish coffee pots.

Most Turks have, however, stuck with the original meaning. To them, ibrik simply means ewer or pitcher.

Cezve (pronounced “jezzve”) is a Turkish word borrowed from the Arabic words jadhwa or jidhwa, which denote ember. Cezve has always been the default name for this pot in Turkey.

Other countries such as Russia, Armenia, Bosnia, and the Balkans use a variation of cezve that’s been adapted to their languages.

In the past, the pot featured an unusually long handle but the size has reduced over time because the user is no longer at risk of getting burned. Ember, which was the source of heat back then, has since been replaced by stoves, which have made it possible even for plastic handles to be used.

Types of Turkish Coffee Pots

These pots can be classified based on two factors: origin and the material that they are made of.

By now you already know about Ibrik and cezve. Both refer to Turkish coffee pots. However, the choice of which term to use between the two depends on where you come from. Most Americans, for example, seem to use ibrik a lot. Turks, on the other hand, prefer cezve over ibrik.

A collage of different types Of Coffee Pots

Coffee pots can also be classified according to the materials used to make them. Available options include copper, brass, stainless steel, and glass. I’ll tell you more about each of these later in the article.

Electric Vs. Stove-Top Turkish Coffee Pots

A stove-top Turkish coffee maker (cezve or ibrik) allows you to control every part of the brewing process while an electric Turkish coffee maker does the brewing on your behalf. However, you will still have to load ground coffee beans into the chamber and add water into the tank before the machine does the rest of the work for you.

Sounds like a convenient option, right? Well, this is no doubt the fastest and most hassle-free way to make Turkish coffee. If you are new to this brewing method or are in a hurry, then the electric version would be a reasonable option to use.

Unfortunately, this appliance is going to need more space in your kitchen. It’s also pricier than the traditional pots and uses electricity. Add maintenance costs to that and it all makes sense why most people haven’t fully embraced it yet.

A Traditional Copper Turkish Coffee Pot Brewing

The other unfortunate thing is that you won’t experience the joy and satisfaction that comes with making Turkish coffee from scratch. Pots actually give you full control over the brewing process.  It’s a rewarding experience that bonds you to the drink’s heritage, making you appreciate it even more.

Why Should You Buy a Traditional Turkish Coffee Pot?

I believe you are no longer indecisive about whether you should purchase an electric Turkish coffee maker or a traditional coffee pot. Your decision boils down to your needs and preferences.

Coffee pot pouring coffee into a demitasse cup

But if you are looking for compelling reasons why you should go for the traditional Turkish coffee pot instead of a stovetop coffee maker or saucepan, here’s why:

  • The long handle makes it easier for you to prepare and serve coffee
  • It’s designed to keep the delicious foam on top, making your coffee taste so much better
  • These pots are made of materials that distribute heat evenly and allow for faster brewing. They also help to keep your coffee hot for hours
  • A cezve coffee pot has a classical look that adds a rustic feel to your kitchen

In a nutshell, only a traditional pot guarantees the real Turkish coffee experience. And if you thought it ends when you empty your cup, I have a surprise for you. The leftover coffee grounds at the bottom of your cup leave patterns that physic readers can use to predict your future. Let me explain.

Turkish Coffee Fortune Telling

This practice started in the 17th century. At the time, it was a pastime activity where Turks and some of the populations in the Middle East would predict their future using leftover coffee grounds.  To date, there are millions of people who still believe in it.

Here’s how it works:

First off, you will need to drink your coffee until you can see the thick mud-like sediment at the bottom of your cup. Place the saucer on top of your cup and then turn it clockwise three times as you make a wish. Thereafter, turn the cup upside down with the saucer still covering the top.

Some people put a ring, coin, or other personal item that represents different fortunes at the bottom of the cup. A coin, for instance, represents fortune in money or career misfortunes.

A cup tilted with a saucer displaying a Turkish Coffee Fortune Telling

Let everything cool down and then observe the shapes and patterns of the residue on the cup and saucer.

You may notice variations in this process, depending on the fortune teller you choose to work with. If you are yet to learn about the art of Turkish coffee fortune telling,  let a professional do the predictions for you.

To be honest, many of us prefer pots made in Turkey because their brands have a clear understanding of how to make them. This Dede pot is no different. The authenticity of its design makes it a special pot that would attract the attention of anyone who walks into your kitchen.

That aside, it’s not every day you come across a huge ibrik coffee pot made of thick antique copper with a hammered effect on the outside. Dede did a great job ensuring you have a large, durable, and great-looking pot that distributes heat evenly as you brew.

Plus, it can keep your drink hot for hours and be used on hot sand and electric, gas, and ceramic stovetops.

CopperBull THICKEST Turkish Greek Arabic Coffee Pot

Copperbull Coffee Pot Close Up
8.1
Best Suited For: Households
CopperBull THICKEST Ibrik
POSITIVES
  • The neat design makes it ideal for those who prefer a simple plain pot
  • Lined with tin to make it safer for your drink
  • Easy-to-hold handle for smooth brewing
  • Thick copper means it can last longer than most pots
  • Large enough to serve a household
NEGATIVES
  • Takes more space because of its larger capacity
  • Not dishwasher but it’s very easy to clean

Thickness is the major highlight of this pot, as you can tell from the name. It’s a 2-mm copper cezve designed to serve you for the longest time possible. Except for a shiny surface and curved wooden handle, there’s nothing much to say about its exterior. But when it comes to Turkish coffee brewing, this pot works magic.

Key Features

  • Capacity: 15 ounces ( 5-6 cups)
  • Body material: copper
  • Handle material: wood
  • Made in Turkey
  • Tin lining

Unlike the other pots on the list, this model has a narrower opening that allows plenty of foam to rise to the top, causing your brew to be more delicious. The thick copper supplies the optimal temperature needed to brew your coffee faster.

To make your brewing experience even better and safer, CopperBull used a neat dark oak handle that’s easy to grip. In addition, the pot features a wider base that provides better stability as you brew.

CopperBull isn’t a new name to anyone who’s been in the coffee industry long enough. You probably know it as a trusted coffee brand. It’s therefore not surprising to see this CopperBul cezve ranking among the best Turkish coffee pots. No other pot on this list would serve you better than this CopperBull cezve if you have a family of 5 or 6. If I were you, I would buy it without a second thought.

Caizen Coffee Quality Turkish Coffee Pot

Caizen Coffee Stainless Steel Turkish Greek Coffee Pot
7
Best Suited For: Adventurous Turkish Coffee Lovers
Caizen Stainless Steel Ibrik Pot
POSITIVES
  • Can also be used to make other beverages
  • Simple, sleek design that blends with most kitchen decors
  • It’s dishwasher safe therefore very easy to clean and more convenient
  • Lightweight, durable, great for camping.
  • It doesn’t scratch or fade
NEGATIVES
  • It doesn’t make the best Turkish coffee but the resulting brew is nice nonetheless

I would understand if you wouldn’t dare touch anything that deviates from the Turkish coffee heritage. However, if you are eager to try something new, then this stainless steel cezve would be a great option. It may not produce the same quality of coffee as copper or brass pots, but there are other things you will love about it, like its sleek design and versatility.

Key Features

  • Capacity: 15 ounces (5-6 cups)
  • Body material: stainless steel
  • Handle material: stainless steel
  • Made in China

You’ve probably noticed the beautiful sleek design this pot boasts of. It has the clean modern look you could use to transform your kitchen. And it’s more than a coffee pot; you can also use it to brew tea, make hot chocolate, or froth milk for your lattes

Caizen Coffee Sleek Arabic Coffee Pot pouring coffee into a mug

Beauty and versatility aside, stainless steel is non-toxic and more resistant to corrosion. There’s no need for a tin lining as is the case with a copper Turkish coffee pot. You will also have an easier time taking care of it in terms of cleaning and maintenance.

Unfortunately, a stainless steel cezve won’t yield the same flavor and aroma as a copper coffee pot. It’s not the most suitable material for Turkish coffee brewing.

The convenience this Caizen stainless steel cezve offers may just turn out to be the reason you should consider it. If you don’t mind having the average cup of joe that it makes, then your days with it will be exciting and stress-free. I would also recommend it to the adventurous coffee lovers eager to explore different coffee makers.

  • Made in Turkey

What Type of Material Should I Choose?

Turkish coffee pots are made from either copper, brass, stainless steel, or glass. Each material has its benefits and shortcomings.

Brass and Copper

Brass and copper Turkish coffee pots are the most popular options among Turks and coffee lovers. However, brass is a little difficult to find nowadays. Both share the following benefits:

  • Heat up coffee faster
  • Distribute heat evenly
  • Retain heat for a longer time

Unfortunately, these two are not the cheapest and easiest to clean. Also, acidic coffee can corrode a copper pot with time, causing the material to leach into your brew. So, make sure that the pot is lined with a food-safe layer material such as non-reactive tin or silver.

Stainless Steel and Glass

Stainless steel and glass pots lack the heat-related benefits that the other two pots have,  but they do not corrode easily. In fact, glass has the highest degree of corrosion resistance. Brass too is less likely to corrode.

Of the four, stainless steel is the easiest to clean and unlike glass and copper, it doesn’t require delicate handling. It’s also generally cheaper than the rest

Except for glass, none of the other pots will allow you to conveniently monitor your coffee as it brews.

That said, all of these pots are safe to use and durable if handled properly. It’s up to you to decide which material is best for your needs.

Why The Type of Handle Matters

Coffee pot handles come in either copper, brass, stainless steel, wood, or plastic.

Wood

If you are looking to have a smaller pot, wood would be great because it doesn’t conduct heat as fast as metal handles. Even bigger pots work well with wood handles. Plus, most of them are curved to give you a better grip while brewing,

Metal Handles

Stainless steel, copper, and brass are the most common metal handles used in coffee pots. All of them are strong with proven durability. Unfortunately, such handles are good conductors of heat, which means these three are more likely to get hot as you brew. That’s why it’s best to go for models with long metal handles because they are safer.

Plastic

Plastic isn’t common but you might come across it. Even when it’s food-safe and heat-resistant, plastic can’t be fully trusted. Also, it’s not the best material to pair with such an old cherished coffee-making pot.

Glass Handles

Even though it’s a good conductor of heat, glass doesn’t distribute heat as fast as metal. It’s therefore less likely to burn you as you brew. But since it’s a delicate material, you have to handle it with a lot of care. In fact, if the glass is too brittle, it won’t take long before it cracks.

Other Factors To Consider Before Buying Traditional Turkish Coffee Pots

Before you even start probing your preferred cezve/ibrik, first make sure it has a narrow top, a wide base, and a handle that’s long enough to keep your arm and hands safe as you prepare and serve your brew.

One more thing: This pot is now being made in different parts of the world but if you want to feel more connected to its heritage, then go for those labeled “made/handmade in Turkey”.

Once that’s done, look at the following factors. It’s the only way you will find the best Turkish coffee pot.

Price

Prices for these coffee pots vary based on material and capacity.  Some, especially those made out of stainless steel, cost only a few dollars while a brass or copper Turkish coffee pot can cost tens or even hundreds of dollars.

Pot Size & Capacity

These pots come in various sizes each suited to different purposes. The capacity is normally listed under the product description, Some brands use fluid ounces while others only state the cup capacity. Keep in mind that the standard size of a Turkish coffee cup is 2.0-2.5 fl. oz

To illustrate that, a 9 oz pot can produce up to four cups of Turkish coffee. Such a pot is also easier to work with because of its smaller size. However, if you have a family or expect more people to be visiting your home, then a 15 oz pot would be ideal because it can brew up to 6 cups.

Extras

While shopping, you will realize some pots come as part of a set that includes accessories and items that make it easy for you to get started on your Turkish coffee brewing journey. It could also be a suitable choice if you are not new to this but lack the essential items.

These sets vary from brand to brand. A Turkish coffee pot set could include the following:

  • Sugar Bowl
  • Spoon set
  • Turkish coffee cup(s)
  • Sandbox for making Turkish sand coffee.
  • Free Turkish Coffee

Concluding Our Traditional Turkish Coffee Pot Review

By now, I believe you already know how to tell a good cezve/ibrik coffee pot from a bad one. Just to remind you again, consider the body and handle material, capacity, country of origin, price, and safety. That’s how I arrived at this list.

Each of these pots can brew the best Turkish coffee. However, they are made to suit different circumstances. BOSPHORUS, for instance, would be an ideal option if you are just starting your Turkish coffee journey or looking for a cheaper way to obtain Turkish coffee equipment.

Because of its large capacity, CopperBull THICKEST might just be what you need to feed your big family. Volarium, on the other hand, suits those who live alone or need no more than two cups in one go.

In short, keep your specific needs in mind and then narrow down to what you believe to be the best Turkish coffee pot for you.

Good luck in your search for the cezve of your dreams!

FAQs About Turkish Coffee Pots

How Do I Clean My Traditional Turkish Coffee Pot?

First things first, never use a dishwasher, harsh cleaning agents, abrasive pads, or steel wool to clean your cezve coffee pot, especially if it’s made of copper.

Instead, look for a sponge, dishcloth, or a recommended cleaning material for copper, and then use soap and water to wipe it. Rinse it thereafter with a soft dry piece of cloth to avoid spotting.

What Equipment Do I Need To Make Turkish Coffee?

Of course, you will need a good cezve for a start. A coffee grinder is equally important, especially if you plan on not using pre-ground coffee. Make sure it’s the kind that can grind your beans to a very fine texture. Other essential items include Turkish coffee cups and plastic or wooden stirring spoons. Avoid metallic spoons because they will scratch your pot.

As for the ingredients, you will need finely ground coffee, cold filtered water, granulated sugar, spices (optional), and treats such as Turkish delight. Once you have all these items in place, you are set to go.

Quick note: You will need a different set of items when using a Turkish coffee machine.

Can I Make Turkish Coffee In A Regular Pot?

The answer is yes. It’s possible to make Turkish coffee in a regular pot. However, your coffee will not be as tasty and flavorsome as one made in a cezve. You could also have a hard time brewing if the handle is shorter.

What separates a cezve from a regular coffee maker is the design and heating properties. Every little detail, from the long handle and material to a long spout and narrow opening, plays a role in how the beverage turns out.

We will be happy to hear your thoughts
